Benri na apuri

Using Noun-Adjectives as Modifiers

When using noun-adjectives as modifiers, the structure changes slightly compared to their standalone forms.

Affirmative

When using noun-adjectives as modifiers in the affirmative form, you add “na” after the noun-adjective, followed by the noun it modifies.

kenkou na tabemono = healthy food
shizuka na heya = quiet room
yuumei na hito = famous person
benri na mono = convenient thing

Negative

When using noun-adjectives as modifiers in the negative form, you add “janai” after the noun-adjective, followed by the noun it modifies. “…janai” is the short form of noun-adjective.

kenkou janai tabemono = not a healthy food
shizuka janai heya = not a quiet room
yuumei janai hito = not a famous person
benri janai mono = not a convenient thing
